OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)

What is OPAL?

At Acorns Primary School, we believe that play is an essential part of every child's development. That is why we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school.

OPAL is a nationally recognised programme that helps schools improve the quality of children's play opportunities. It is built on the understanding that play supports children's physical health, emotional wellbeing, social skills, creativity, resilience and confidence.

Through OPAL, we are transforming our outdoor spaces and playtimes so that every child has access to rich, exciting and inclusive opportunities for exploration, imagination and adventure.

What Does OPAL Look Like at Acorns?

Our children enjoy access to a variety of outdoor environments, including the playground, Science Garden, Orchard and EYFS outdoor area. We provide a wide range of play opportunities such as:

  • Sand and water play
  • Mud kitchen activities
  • Small world and imaginative play
  • Construction and loose parts play
  • Chalk art and creative activities
  • Ball games and scooters
  • Reading and quiet spaces
  • Music and performance opportunities
  • Climbing and physical challenges

These experiences encourage children to work together, solve problems, take appropriate risks and develop independence.

Playing in All Weathers

We believe there is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing. By encouraging children to come equipped with wellies and outdoor clothing, we can ensure that play continues throughout the year and that children benefit from outdoor experiences in every season.

Why is Play Important?

Research shows that high-quality play opportunities can help children to:

  • Improve physical fitness and coordination
  • Develop communication and teamwork skills
  • Build confidence and resilience
  • Enhance creativity and problem-solving abilities
  • Support positive mental health and wellbeing
  • Strengthen friendships and social development

Our OPAL Journey

Acorns Primary School has embraced OPAL as a key part of our school culture. With dedicated leadership, ongoing development of our outdoor spaces and the involvement of pupils, staff and families, we are committed to providing the very best play experiences for all children. Our aim is to create a school environment where every child can thrive, learn and enjoy childhood through play.
